The 16 mega pixel Sony TX10 features an “Exmor R” back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which promises to greatly improve low-light performance, resulting in cleaner images with less noise. Featuring a metal body, sliding front plate and folded lens optics, the super-slim Sony TX10 offers a 25-100mm equivalent 4x zoom lens, 3 inch touch-sensitive rear screen, Super Steady Shot optical image stabilization, face and smile detection technology, ISO 3200 and intelligent scene recognition. The Sony TX10 also boasts continuous burst shooting up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, clever Sweep Panorama mode for extra-wide landscapes, and 1920×1080 pixel Full HD movie recording with stereo sound and HDMI output. Compatible with both SD (HC) and Memory Stick PRO Duo memory cards, the Sony TX10 camera is available in silver, black, green, blue and pink for around £319 / $330.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 is a waterproof, freeze proof, dustproof and shockproof digital compact camera. Enter a solution in the fashion-conscious Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10, which follows on from the TX5 we reviewed last year, and is likewise a waterproof, dust, shock and freeze proofed model. You wouldn’t notice a change in proportions between the two Cyber-shots, although the Sony cybershot TX10 is apparently 17.9mm in depth compared to the TX5′s 17.7mm. The Sony Cybershot TX10 once again sports a slide open and shoot lens cover mechanism that powers up the camera at the same time, even though there are separate on/off and playback buttons that achieve the same end. When shooting stills, the screen’s dimensions are cropped to present a 4:3 ratio picture, black bands framing the image left and right, upon which shooting info and operational buttons (including shooting mode) are overlaid. The TX10′s lens is somewhat modest, but adequately usable. The TX10′s so-so lens is married to a 1/2.3-type back illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor offering the suggestion of a better low light performance but also 16.2 effective mega pixels, a considerable mark up from the TX5′s 10.1 MP (or the TX9′s 12MP).

Being a touch screen model, physical controls on the TX10 are few and limited to the core essentials. Press down fully to take the shot and, after the standard 2-3 second wait, a single image is committed to memory.

The record/shooting modes number eight on the TX10. We have the aforementioned Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto modes, the iSweep Panorama shooting mode (a tap of which also provides access to a dedicated underwater panorama option), plus Movie Mode, regular Program Auto, Background Defocus, 16-option Scene Selection (also including an underwater option alongside the regular portrait, twilight shooting and backlight correction modes), plus 3D Shooting mode. As well as the physical playback button atop the camera, we also get a small virtual review button nestling below the one for accessing the shooting modes which, when in playback, automatically becomes a capture mode icon for swapping back between the two. Top left of the screen we get a dedicated button for the self-explanatory menu, buttons for accessing flash settings, self-timer options, image size and resolution wedged between this and an enigmatic question mark.

“Nice quality camera -  Just got this camera and so far it is far better than expected. I give 4 stars only because I have not yet tried the waterproof function. The video is incredibly sharp, great sound and has the option of taking stills while recording. Easy to use touch screen (which can also be “locked” so you don’t accidentally change settings). Camera quickly starts up when you slide open the front cover, no need to press on button. The menus and many different scene selections are very simple to use and understand with a built in instruction manual in the menu as well. I did put a cell phone screen protector on the touch screen to protect it from scratches etc. This camera is also fantastic in low light conditions. My last camera was very poor in low light so this really stands out for me. As for waterproofing, there are rubber gaskets on the two covers that open. The buttons to open these are small and recessed so I don’t think they would accidentally be opened underwater unless they had not been closed tightly to begin with. I used it yesterday in conditions below freezing and it performed well, battery life was good and the pictures turned out great. Great little camera (about the size of a credit card)!”

“Awesome Camera! - “This camera does it all and looks great while doing it. I got this camera to replace my kodak z1285 and z7590 point and shoot camera. Its A LOT better than those. I know everyone keeps saying bad things about the slide down cover, its not as bad as they say. so, here’s a list of things that are great about this camera. 1) taking pictures either still or panoramic, or macro, or whatever pictures, it is very easy and it has an intelligent picture mode (very nice). In high-resolution panoramic mode you can take pictures up to 40 something megapixels!!! I’ve tried it, it’s awesome. 2) the touch-screen works better than i thought it would. (again, people writing bad reviews about the touch-screen being unresponsive). it comes with a small pen like thing for the touch-screen if you don’t want to use your fingers. works great and makes switching between modes very easy. 3) the videos on this camera are AMAZING! they are life-like when you’re viewing them on the camera. (i always use the FX AVCHD 24M 60i 1080 mode). it says you can only burn it on blue ray discs and not regular dvds. and if you want to upload a video to youtube from it, which took me a while to figure out how to do on a mac, you find the file named PRIVATE then find STREAM and the video files with audio included should have .mts on the end. they take FOREVER (at least 2 1/2 hours) for a 4 minute clip to upload. or if you wanted a less quality 720p video uploaded from a mac, you could use imovie and export it as a quicktime movie. I prefer to let people see what this camera can do, so i don’t mind if it takes longer to upload. although, there is a free downloadable software on koyotesoftdotcom that converts the AVCHD/mts2 files to any other format. its called free hd converter. 4) i tested it under water and it works great. EVERY TIME you turn on the camera it reminds you to shut the battery compartment and the door for the hdmi, so if it gets fried under water then, its probably your own fault. i’ve only had it for about a week and still need to learn all the features on it. (so many!) ”
